Use of Open-Source Software for Quantitative Analysis of Multiplex Images
How open-source software turns multiplex immunostaining into a quantitative, spatial readout of the cells in a tissue.
In this webinar, Dr. Sara McArdle of the Image Analysis and Microscopy Core at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology discusses her use of open-source software for the quantitative spatial analysis of tissue images. Her subject is how open, freely available tools can be applied to multiplex image data to produce quantitative, spatial readouts of a tissue section.
Much of the discussion centers on multiplex immunostaining as a key method for studying tissue. Labeling many markers on a single section captures the spatial context of the tissue microenvironment — how cells are positioned within the tissue — which Dr. McArdle reviews as the starting point for quantitative analysis.
From there she turns to the statistical quantification of cells: converting multiplexed staining into per-cell measurements that can be counted and compared across an image. The session is a practical look at how open-source software makes that quantitative, spatial analysis of multiplex images achievable.
